In an extensive interview, Esther Vargas, vice president of the College of Engineers, outlined how civil engineering in Peru must evolve to meet sustainability goals while addressing long‑standing sector challenges.

Revaluing Civil Engineering for Sustainable Growth

Vargas said the profession needs a renewed public image because engineers are central to the country’s sustainable development. She stressed that projects must go beyond meeting demand and embed environmental resilience and social well‑being from the design stage.

Her background as a doctor in environment and sustainable development informs the call to blend technical work with social welfare and ecosystem protection, a mix she believes will raise the profession’s standing.

Building the Next Generation of Engineers

To attract younger members, the college is creating early‑career involvement opportunities. Vargas highlighted activities that let fresh graduates interact with seasoned professionals and contribute to technical discussions, supporting a sense of belonging from the outset.

Partnerships with universities and firms now offer scholarships for postgraduate studies and specialized courses. These agreements give early‑career engineers easier access to advanced training and job openings, smoothing their transition into the labor market.

Continuing education remains a cornerstone, according to Vargas. The college runs workshops, seminars, and forums that address new regulations, emerging technologies, and sector trends, ensuring practitioners stay current.

Technology, Training, and Emerging Opportunities

The sector’s credibility suffered from corruption, informal work practices, and uneven construction quality. Vargas argued that reinforcing ethics, transparency, and technical rigor is essential to rebuilding public trust.

Infrastructure gaps persist in transport, housing, sanitation, and water resource management. Closing these gaps will require coordinated investment and modern engineering solutions that address both capacity and durability.

Climate change adds another layer of urgency. Engineers must design structures that can withstand extreme weather events, integrating risk assessments and adaptive features to protect communities.

Digital tools, especially Building Information Modeling (BIM), are reshaping project workflows. Vargas explained that BIM enables multidisciplinary coordination, risk reduction, and cost savings, but success also depends on cultural shifts toward collaborative leadership.

She warned that mastering software alone is insufficient; teams need to adopt new communication habits and shared responsibilities in digital environments.

Looking ahead, Vargas identified three skill groups engineers must develop. First are technological proficiencies such as BIM, big data, and AI applications in construction. In comparing today’s training initiatives to earlier efforts, it appears that past programs often focused narrowly on technical updates, whereas current strategies aim for a broader, interdisciplinary foundation. This shift mirrors global trends where engineering curricula are expanding to include sustainability and digital fluency.

When assessing the adoption of resilience and sustainability criteria, Vargas acknowledged progress but noted that the process is still consolidating. More projects now reference eco‑efficiency, circular economy, and climate risk management, yet these concepts are not yet standard across all works.

Opportunities are emerging in renewable energy infrastructure, smart‑city development, and disaster risk mitigation. The college sees a growing need for engineers to design hydro, wind, and solar facilities, support sustainable urban mobility, and develop adaptive measures for a country prone to natural hazards.

Vargas concluded by emphasizing that civil engineers must lead the transition toward greener, more reliable infrastructure, delivering not only structures but also confidence and long‑term societal benefits.
